I’ve listened to and watched a lot of instructional videos and interviews with drummers over the years. One song that always comes up, with respect to its drum part, is Steve Gadd’s groove in the verses of the Paul Simon song “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”. This is an example of a song whereby if it ended after the first half, it would be pretty boring. But in light of the second half, the first half rocks.

I thought that my monkey tricks were impressive. This is truly the greatest accomplishment to come out of humans ever.
Coheed and Cambria
If you like Rush, and one of your favourite drummers is Taylor Hawkins, then you’ll probably like the album “No World for Tomorrow” by Coheed and Cambria.
Not surprisingly, this song is totally Hawkins. Playing any more, or any less on the drums would be a mistake. Most drummers will play way more on a song like this. Big mistake.
